The Big Bang

Where:
White Rabbit, 30 Belfour St Chippendale

THE BIG BANG celebrates the explosion of creativity that has rocked China since its “Opening Up” to the global economy began in 2000. As political and social controls eased, contemporary artists went into freestyle dance mode, applying their superb technical training to a dizzying array of new subjects, styles and media. For the youngest generations—wired and Web-smart products of the one-child policy—artistic movements and political dogmas are passé.

White Rabbit’s second exhibition, THE TAO OF NOW, presents more than 60 works; only four have previously been shown in Australia. Their themes are as up-to-the-minute as land theft, political power and the lust for luxury goods, but they are also steeped in the oldest parts of Chinese culture: Taoism, Buddhism, Confucianism, martial arts and ancient legends.
